Brushing your teeth seems like a no-brainer, right? Even a child can do it. However, if you want to get optimal results from your brushing, then it’s important to observe a few simple rules and techniques. This is especially true for those wearing braces.

Use the Right Toothbrush

Many of us simply pick up a toothbrush at the store that looks good or is on sale. Sometimes we choose by color or by a brand that we like but getting the right size toothbrush is very important. If you must strain to open your mouth wide enough, then your brush may be too big. Use a toothbrush that is suited to your mouth size and has a comfortable handle.

Many people believe that using a brush with medium or hard bristles will ensure that they get their teeth cleaner. According to the ADA, the medium and hard toothbrushes can cause gum damage. Most people will want to use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Dentists agree that it doesn’t really matter if the bristles are straight or angled. Both types will do a good job.

How Long Should You Brush?

Most experts recommend brushing for two minutes but three minutes is even better. With an electric toothbrush you can, of course, gets more brushing done in a shorter length of time. The most important thing is to make sure that you clean all surfaces of your teeth. Some dentists recommend dividing your mouth into four quadrants and brushing each one for 30 seconds.
