Syrian conflict goes on and the death toll continues to climb

Recent news coming from Syria indicates that two massive blasts in an university campus in Aleppo, country’s largest city and its main commercial center, killed 87 including students who were taking an exam and wounded scores of others.  It happened while some students are taking their final exams.  Both the rebels and the government point their finger at each other.  This is a major escalation point of the ongoing conflict in Syria.

The overall death toll from the conflict which began two years ago now reached over 60,000.  It represents .26 percent of an estimated 22.5 million population of Syria.  The U.N. estimates indicate that between March 15, 2011 and November 30, 2012, the death toll due to the conflict reached 59,648.  This exceeds the total combat death of estimated 50,000 during the Vietnam War.

The U.N. also indicated that the Syrian government is guilty of war crimes against civilians.  In the meantime civilians are lining up for bread almost every day and the food prices are escalating more than 300 percent.  The U.N. is unable to stop the bloodshed even with its envoy’s efforts because Russia and China are opposing any actions on Syria.
